Response to the prompt: The Power of Shadows in Photography

That is the opening paragraph of my story: All You Need to Know About the Soul of Photography. Eastman understood light well. As many of the pioneering Master of photography did.

Ansel Adams — the creator of the Zone System — understood light perhaps better than anyone. His book The Camera is considered one of the top classic books on photographic technique. It is the reason why I still use a Zone V grey card to determine exposure.

Zone V, or Middle Grey, sits in the middle of the grey scale. Camera light meters are calibrated to Zone V. They measure the luminance value of a scene and average it to Zone V. There are five zones lighter than Zone V (VI,VII,VIII,IX,X) and five zones darker (IV,III,II,I,0) Cameras struggle to record detail from all zones on a single image.

So, Zone O is pure black. Zone X is pure white. Light and shadow. See how I got here?

I am more of an artsy-fartsy than a techno-head type of photographer. I have sufficient technical knowledge in my back pocket to feel confident, but to me, it is the image that speaks louder than anything else.

Conversations about camera gear bore me to tears. Shut up and show me your photos. I don’t care what camera you are using. If you are still shooting sunsets I will need a nap.

The shadows produced by the winter sun in southern Portugal are magnificent. I documented the Tour the Algarve bike race a couple of times, and they left a mark. The speed, colors, and energy were intoxicating. In this image the racers gather for a chat before the start of the race.
