Climbing the Ladder

Cedric Williams, University of Notre Dame, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering

To reach the heavens, we simply need a ladder and a way to climb. Or, at least I’d like to believe that the future of human space exploration can be approached in such a forthright manner. Having joined nearly all of mankind in dreaming of what’s waiting for us in the endless depths of space, I consider myself lucky to be born in an era where escaping Earth’s gravitational well is all but trivial. I also consider myself quite unlucky in having been born long before going much farther would seem like anything but a near impossibility. That, of course, doesn’t stop me from pondering on the subject.

The successful relaunch / reuse of a spacecraft by SpaceX all but revolutionized the public perception of space travel. The use of rocket propulsion assisted landing was a major contributing component to reusability.
