Digital Sovereignty

When we look at the internet today we have billions of people who belong to a handful of Social Networks.

In the last decade we have seen tremendous growth in Social Networks. Giants like Facebook and Google host BILLIONS of users. This massive growth came from the simple UI and its “free” to use model. With a few clicks, a user can interact with a friend or relative.

While this has no doubt been an incredible revolution one can’t help but think of the adage “Nothing in Life is Free”.

There has been a lot of buzz the last few years about ‘Corporations owning your Data’. But what exactly does that mean? For the majority of people, they frankly don’t care. Most folks use these networks to chat with loved ones and only care whether the service is reliable and free. After all it’s not like Facebook is auctioning off those embarrassing summer 2008 vacation photos.

The reason we’re content with this is simple… and it’s because we have never experienced anything better.

When one uploads content to a centralized network it’s actually abiding to strict rules. You may, like many, have had a post deleted or censored as it didn’t follow the network guidelines. But in more serious cases an Application can be shut down if the Network feels it’s getting too powerful. As was the case with Zynga when Facebook decided to terminate its agreement and crashed the companies’ user base, leading to massive layoffs and price depreciation. For many, these strict rules and guidelines stifle content creation.

Enter Cryptonetworks

Just as Microprocessors did for the Hardware Era, Linux & The Web did for the Software Era… Cryptonetworks will do the same for the Networks Era.

In each of these historic open source revolutions a new unique capability is added in exchange for some temporary limitations. Cryptonetworks temporarily trade off scalability and speed for Trust.

With open source networks like DFINITY and Ethereum removing Trust, a new breed of innovation and applications will come to surface. Just as applications like Uber arose from the adding of GPS on smartphones and Instagram from the addition of a camera.

As cryptonetworks mature we will see true Digital Sovereignty. When users and content creators are no longer constrained by censorship and rules we will see a renaissance of creativity.
