Civil disobedience

Just like Martin Luther King Jr., many others performed acts of civil disobedience to change the state of social justice. Immoral laws such as segregation and slavery are excellent examples of why civil disobedience is a necessary tool for change, or else it is deemed acceptable and even ethical, at least in those standards back then by majority rule. There are many laws that are created for very difference reasons all over the world, not just the U.S. I do not believe St. Augustines view that “an unjust law is no law at all.” This is because every state, country and government have their own views on what is a just or necessary law, either because of religion, experience, profit or protest of the people. It is just as some say, “either you like it or get out.” Even though some do not have the luxury to “get out”, there are methods to change the law. If all options are exhausted, that same energy can be put to either accept it or move on somewhere else just as many flee countries seeking asylum. There will always be laws some do not agree with but can be a necessary evil to protect most if not all.

Rosa Parks case comes to mind as an important, legitimate use of civil disobedience. Slavery is freshly abolished yet segregation and racism still runs rampant. These uses diminish ones humanity and prevents progress of one particular race because of their past and the majorities view of them. No legal pursuit would ever change society when the law favors white supremacy. Thus, Rosa Parks sat where she wanted to in protest of these abhorrent views of black people. Sitting anywhere but the back of the bus was illegal in Montgomery, Alabama and gave a voice and courage to those who heard of the event, including MLK whom spoke about and provided that extra spark for their fight for equality.
