In 2018 I bet my friends that I can complete a marathon race in a year

Last year I bet my friends that I would be able to prepare for a full marathon in under a year. Time passed, but I didn’t do much. With about 5 months left until the deadline, I decided it was time to start training. Of course, the mistakes came one after another:

1. At first, I was very enthusiastic. I started to run every day, forgetting that I was not 20 years old anymore. After the first week of terrible knee pain, I had to abruptly reduce my tempo.

2. I didn’t check any training programs at first. I just started running without thinking about my tempo, breathing, or anything else.

3. NUTRITION — maybe my biggest mistake. I didn’t want to spend time reading about what I should eat. I thought I was getting everything I needed with “varied” food, with a minimal amount of meat. I took about 1500 kcal, and there were days in which I ran for 60–90 min.

I was able to fix some of those mistakes by the third month of my training, after being completely exhausted. The last couple of weeks before the race, my preparation was much better and somehow I was able to finish and win the bet.

I enjoyed the whole adventure. The other participants in the race were very kind and helped me a lot, as did my friends and family who supported me and were with me the whole time. I really enjoyed participating in the marathon race. Even though I was almost last, I was able to finish in a little over 5 hours. I prove to myself that I could achieve any goal I set for myself.

It is very interesting for me that immediately after the competition, a desire for more and more challenges emerges. I decided I am not going to train to improve my marathon performance. I will start training for a triathlon race. This time, I want to do it right with a well-prepared training program and nutrition plan. The first triathlon I want to prepare for is 5i50 or 1.5km swimming, 40km cycling, 10km running. The problem is that I can’t swim at the moment. The good thing is that I will learn how to do it.

After finishing that distance, I will start preparing for Half Ironman 70.3 (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running). My main goal is in 3 years to complete Ironman (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42 km running). That is a race that I really admire. The strength of the participants, their perseverance and motivation, are such an inspiration for me. I want to participate in such a race because I want to test the limits of my own physical and mental stamina.
