Go easy on yourself

Contrary to what you might think, scientists aren’t always great at communicating with each other. Biologists don’t speak the language of physics, physicists don’t speak the language of geology…

Little Things

Bringing the “in-betweens” back in the spotlight

The sound of downpour, the pleasant smell of nature after a rain, the sight of a cloudy and dark sky —these things supercharge my soul. Some are trivial and often go unnoticed and neglected, but say a lot about the little things —they matter.

We experience little things daily. Waking up, listening to birds chirp in the morning, sharing a good meal, seeing someone smile, talking to someone, these touch the very core of our existence —how we live life.

The past three months have exposed a lot of the little things. Some of which have been life changing.

For one and the most obvious, literally, a microorganism, as small as 60 to 140 nanometer has destabilized everyone’s immune system.

Second, staying home, practicing hygiene, maintaining safe distance, and wearing masks are measures to help prevent the spread of the virus. These ways, no matter how small have kept us protected.

Third, the act of charity showed how we exist in mutual tolerance and respect with others.

The anatomy of big things consists of the little things. We didn’t expect social distancing to be the norm. We didn’t even need to think about it four months ago. Because, duh! Who wants to think, celebrate, or evaluate every small things we face or achieve? Who would even make fuss about one or two people getting infected in the first months of pandemic, levels to which it didn’t reach communities? No one would dare to think the repercussions. The Philippine government is a testament to this. It would be exhausting and time-consuming.

This is exactly the reason why we lose our appreciation to the little things because we don’t explicitly see its value. We abandoned and neglected them. We have forgotten how it significantly affects us. We only acknowledge it when it is already there, pertinent to us.

Unfortunately, we needed a pandemic to help us realize and uncover these things. We were forced to live with this reality. It disrupted the way we see the little things and provides a reality about how we see them.

Big things have always been in the spotlight for years. It’s only about time to give the little things a fighting chance.
