Bruno Fernandes new Man Utd Captain!

The Magnifico will takeover from Harry Maguire

It was announced today by the club at 16:30 BST that Bruno Fernandes will be the new permanent captain. After Erik ten Hag stripped the captaincy off of Harry Maguire last Sunday, Bruno was one of the favourites to take up the armband.

So it has come to pass. As he was basically the captain for most of last season, he has kind of been the skipper for the club for a year. Now that it is official, I’m sure he will be feeling even more prideful at being given this prestgious honor.

Last season, he was mad (in a good way). The thing about a captain (and player) is first and foremost: availability. Up steps Bruno.

Man Utd played 62 games in a hectic campaign last year. Fernandes played all but three. 59 out of 62 games. This was a season that had a World Cup in the middle (which he took part), and with United in all four competitions until pretty much the end of them all, games were being played every three days. Bruno started and played almost all the minutes, 5 164 out of 5 580 to be exact.

And Bruno missed just three. Two of them due to suspension because of racking up yellow cards. The guy has also never been injured…

in his entire career 🙃.

In terms of availability, Bruno is the personification of that. On top of that, he is an amazing player, is always there to help his teammates, gives everything for the shirt and has really grown into the role of captain and leader after this past season.

This leadership wasn’t necessarily something that I saw as an attribute of his. Even if he showed some leadership traits, he wasn’t one I would’ve thought of as the next captain.

But last season, man, he was the only pick for me once Maguire was relieved of his skipper duties.

His record as captain last season reads:

Games played: 59
Games captained: 42
Wins as captain: 29
Draws as captain: 7
Defeats as captain: 6
Win percentage as captain: 69.05%

Ridiculous record.

Making Bruno the captain has become another major call in the hat of Erik ten Hag. In his short time at the club, not only has the manager revolutionised the team and made us all believe again, ten Hag has also made some HUUUUUUUGGGGGGGEEEEEEE calls:

- got rid of Ronaldo
- got rid of de Gea
- took captaincy off Maguire
- made Bruno his captain

For a long time, us fans have been crying out for a manager who is truly in charge and is ruthless. While the likes of van Gaal and Mourinho may have been ruthless to some extent, they were never truly ‘the boss’. The term ‘player power’ was thrown around the club for many years indicating this very point.

With Erik though, that has all seemed to change. And I love it. We need someone in control of the dressing room and we finally have that man.

This is one of the reasons as to why whenever he makes calls (small, big or possibly controversial), we back him. We trust in him to do the right thing.

Making Fernandes captain is one of these right calls. I 100% agree with it because he has shown how important he is to the team, how reliable he is and that he can be the captain while still performing at a high level.

Fernandes had 14 goals and 15 assists last campaign. 29 g/a in 59 games. That is almost a goal or assist every two games. Plus he is versatile in that he can play multiple positions.

Bruno Magnifico indeed. My captain ✊. This is truly becoming Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United. The ten Hag era is well under way.
