Use This 2 Step Strategy to Remember More of What You Read

I read two books and dozens of articles each week. Here’s how I remember it all.

These days, it’s so easy to consume.

Information is constantly at our fingertips, which is amazing. But it’s also really easy to just consume one thing and move right on to the next thing. We’ve been conditioned to seek novelty — that’s why apps like TikTok are so addictive. You watch a quick video, but before it gets boring, there’s a brand new one. That’s great for entertainment.

But when you’re trying to learn, it’s not ideal. I love finishing a book and moving on to a brand new one. I love downloading a bunch of podcasts and just going from one to the next.

But none of this is conducive to learning. So, I’ve created a process that is simple but also effective, that helps me remember what I’ve read, and maybe more importantly, to apply what I’ve learned to my life.

This step is relatively easy, especially if you highlight as you go.

Even if you don’t highlight, it can be helpful to go on to Google and simply search for the top quotes from the book, and pick your favorite 3.

For most avid readers, we probably have hundreds of highlights from every book we read. This is why I think it’s so important to review these and pick your top 3. The criteria for making it into the top 3 is up to you, and will often depend on what type of book it is.

However, the process of reviewing and selecting important passages is a great way to remember what the book was about and what you learned.

Here are some examples of mine:
