This Thracian soldier got what he deserved

Alexander the Great was king of Macedon from 336–323 BCE. A year into his reign over the kingdom, many Greeks revolted against their new ruler and declared independence from Macedonian leadership, much to Alexander’s frustration.

Thebes — the largest city in the ancient region of Boeotia — was at the centre of this revolt. In response, Alexander marched his army towards the city. Despite Thebes being four-hundred miles away, he reached the city in fourteen days, having traveled across wild, rugged terrain and several mountain ranges.

His arrival in Boeotia caused many Greeks to abandon their desire for independence. The Theban assembly wasn’t easily quelled, however.

After failing to reach a diplomatic agreement, Alexander’s army attacked the city of Thebes. Men were executed, women and children were enslaved, and the city was burnt to the ground.

But there was one woman who demonstrated a surprising level of resilience whilst the city crumbled around her.

In his biography of Alexander the Great, Plutarch (c. 46–119 AD) tells the story of Timoclea in the Battle of Thebes.

During the conflict, several Thracian soldiers broke into Timoclea’s house. The captain of this group of soldiers was aggressive towards Timoclea and raped her.

Still not satisfied, he then inquired about Timoclea’s wealth. She responded by saying there was money hidden in her garden. The captain followed her outside.

Timoclea showed the captain the well and told him she’d hidden treasure there whilst the city was under siege. The insatiable captain then peered into the well, expecting to see his prize.
